IEC (Import Export Code )

Import Export Code (also known as IEC) is a 10 digit identification number that is issued by the DGFT (Director General of Foreign Trade), Department of Commerce, Government of India. It is also known as Importer Exporter Code.It is mandatory for every Entity to obtain this code to start a business that deals with import and export in the Indian Territory (Goods and/or Services). It is not possible to deal with export or import business without this code.

Features:-

  • It possesses a life time validity. It is required in case you needs to import any good in India.
  • When an importer sends money abroad through banks then it’s needed by the bank.
  • When an exporter receives money in foreign currency directly into his bank account then its required by the bank.

Required Documents:-

  • Current Bank Account Details
  • Self-attested copy of the PAN (permanent account number ) card
  • Banker’s Certificate
  • Two copies of the passport size photograph of the applicant that is duly attested by the banker of the applicant
  • Covering letter on the letterhead of the applicant’s company to request for the issue of new IEC certification.
  • Copy of Rent Agreement or Electricity Bill Copy of the premise.

Compliances for IEC:-


IEC does not require the filing of any returns. Once allotted, there isn’t any requirement to follow any sort of processes for sustaining its validity. Even for export transactions, there isn’t any requirement for filing any returns with DGFT.

Attention!!

DGFT has mandated all IEC holders to update their Importer-Exporter Code(IEC) yearly between April to June From 01.04.2021. IECs not updated within this prescribed period would be de-activated.
